about

Luis Armando Colina is a Cuban-American artist based in South Florida. He received his BFA from the New World School of the Arts, with a concentration on painting. His work spans oil painting, animation, drawings, and music. His canvases are densely layered, richly textured meditations on nature, the body, and the materiality of paint itself oscillating between figuration and abstraction. Colina's intuitive approach to painting translates his lived experience in the world onto the canvas, creating complex narratives. His charged use of oil paints is carefully layered, scraped, and rearticulated over several months. His work deals with issues of allegory, environmentalism, spirituality, and materiality. Colina’s artwork employs a range of aesthetic and cultural references; spanning paintings' rich history, poetry, popular culture, and his own heritage.
